Summary Trying and Executing a King For the first few months of , Oliver Cromwell was concerned about what role he would play in the new government that followed the English Civil War. King Charles I was held hostage by Parliament, but Parliament itself had returned under the control of a conservative Presbyterian faction which favored.   As one of the generals on the parliamentary side in the English Civil Wars (–51) against Charles I, Oliver Cromwell helped overthrow the Stuart monarchy, and, as lord protector (–58), he raised England’s status once more to that of a leading European power from the decline it had gone through since the death of Elizabeth I.

In his new book, Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, Dr Maurice Ashley, a leading authority on seventeenth-century history, compares and contrasts the characters and careers of the two men. He shows how they were confronted with the same sort of problems and therefore, to a surprisingly large extent, were obliged to deal with them in much the same. The Trial of Charles I. - , AM - PM.
